Managers
and their Ejections Baltimore Orioles manager Earl Weaver considered quarrelling with the umpire pure sport. He was ejected almost 100 times during the course of Managing Hardball and Hardheads 97 his seventeen-season career. In August, 1975, he was ejected from both games of a double header. It is well known that Weaver had a long-standing feud with umpire Ron Luciano. In the minors, he was ejected in four consecutive games by Luciano. When they both got to the majors, Luciano tossed Weaver eight times. The rift was so bad that eventually the ump was not assigned to any more Orioles games. It’s possible that Weaver was right to argue calls. In one of Luciano’s books, The Umpire Strikes Back, he wrote that “any umpire who claims he has never missed a play is, well, an umpire.” Luciano seemed to believe that ignorance really was bliss.. . . * * * What do you want to do now? 1) Back to Interactive Table of Contents 2) Buy autographed books, Savvy Girls shirts, Scorebooks and Quarterly Magazine from this site 3) Buy book at: 4) Send a nice e-mail to Deidre and Jackie! |
