Joe
McCarthy Meanwhile, McCarthy stayed on the sidelines of the growing national pastime until he was recruited to manage the Chicago Cubs before the 1926 season. In 1931 he moved to run the New York Yankees, where Babe Ruth stalked the outfield. Ruth had not only become a mature slugger since he and McCarthy faced off seventeen years earlier, he had also become a household name—and McCarthy was on his way toward becoming one, too. McCarthy managed the Bronx Bombers through May 1946, winning seven World Series with a rotating tap of Hall of Famers such as Joe DiMaggio, Lou Gehrig, Phil Rizzuto, Lefty Gomez, and Ruth. He retired in the middle of the 1950 season with 2,125 wins and a .615 winning percentage, putting him atop the manager totem pole. McCarthy shares the record for most managerial World Series wins with Casey Stengel, who took over the Yankees in 1949. . . * * * What do you want to do now? 1) Back to Interactive Table of Contents 2) Buy autographed books, Savvy Girls shirts, Scorebooks and Quarterly Magazine from this site 3) Buy book at: 4) Send a nice e-mail to Deidre and Jackie! |
