. . . The number five spot is considered the “hot corner” because screaming line drives from right-handed batters often bear down on the third baseman (5). He has to be fearless. Some of these line drives require the third baseman to make athletic diving catches followed by Herculean throws to first from his knees. Fortunately, because the ball gets there so quickly off the bat, the third baseman normally has a little more time to ensure an accurate throw. Many third basemen have translated their great throwing strength into strength at the plate. This can be seen by the many hardhitting players at that position.

The Orioles’ third baseman Brooks Robinson was a sixteen-time Gold Glove winner. He was so adept at vacuuming up infield ground balls that his opponents in the 1970 World Series nicknamed him “Hoover.” After Baltimore won that series, Cincinnati Reds manager Sparky Anderson joked about Robinson’s skill, saying, “If I dropped this paper plate, he’d pick it up on one hop and throw me out at first.”. . .
