. . . One such batter was Philadelphia Hall of Famer Richie Ashburn, who played in the mid-1900s. His Hall of Fame plaque says that Ashburn had a “superb knowledge of the strike zone,” but it doesn’t mention how his talent took a maniacal turn. Ashburn was curiously capable at fouling off balls. The real madness came in August of 1957 when, as usual, Ashburn was fouling off pitches into the stands. One hit the wife of a local sports writer and broke her nose. The game was suspended for a few minutes as medics tended to her. When the game resumed, Ashburn fouled off the very next pitch, hitting the same woman again as she was being carried off on a stretcher . . .
